Painting and Architecture
- Had Christians obeyed the Second Commandment, no Christian
figurative art would have been produced. Indeed even the earliest
Christian writers, including Tertullian and Origen, condemned the
depiction of religious subjects as blasphemous. But pious
Christians, attracted by the pull of humanism, commissioned frescoes for
underground burial chambers and sculptures for their sarcophagi, or
marble tombs.
